Southland

Southland is New Zealand’s southernmost mainland region. Its Maori name, Murihiku, means ‘the tail end of the land.’ Southland encompasses the southwest tip of the South Island and Stewart Island, 30km offshore.

Like the province of Otago to the immediate north, Southland was settled by large numbers of Scottish leaving behind an economic depression in Scotland in search of a better life. The area offers rich farming land, and the growth of butter and cheese exports in the 1880s encouraged the growth of dairy farming. Farming remains one of Southland’s primary industries today, along with its other natural resources, such as forestry, hydroelectric power and coal. Thousands in the region work in processing Southland’s natural resources in food processing factories and the like.

Southland’s economy was facing decline in the 1990s, until a novel educational scheme was initiated which is credited with revitalising the city of Invercargill. The Southland Institute of Technology (SIT) operates a Zero Fees Scheme, in which NZ citizens and permanent residents can study at tertiary level and pay only the material costs of their programme. The scheme was funded by local industry and community supporters until the increased roll resulted in more government funding, making the Zero Fees Scheme self-sustaining. The aim was to draw more young people to the region, and it did: in the first year of the scheme SIT’s roll leapt by 46%. And in 2010, it was estimated that Southland’s economy was $118 million and 734 full-time equivalent jobs better off thanks to the Zero Fees Scheme.

Southland is one of New Zealand’s most sparsely populated areas. Around 95,000 people live in an area spanning more than 34,000 square kilometres. A sizeable portion of western Southland is taken up by an area known as Fiordland, which is almost devoid of permanent human habitation. The region’s main city, Invercargill, accounts for more than half of its people.

Southland is known for its cold and severe climate. Winter’s mean maximum temperature in Invercargill is a chilly 9.5°C, and Southland is prone to extremes of cold at times. The lowest recorded winter temperature was -18°C, in July 1946. Summers are cooler than average: Invercargill for example reaches an average of 18.5° in January, compared to more than 22° in many other locations. Sunshine hours in the region are around 25% lower than elsewhere in New Zealand, and strong wind and significant rain is common.

Notable events in Southland include the Bluff regatta and oyster festival. The oyster festival sees thousands of people from around New Zealand and even overseas travel to Bluff, a seaport town 30km from Invercargill thought of as mainland New Zealand’s southernmost point, to celebrate the opening of the annual oyster season and enjoy the array of seafood Southland’s ports have to offer. The Southland town of Gore is home to the New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards, held by the Gore Country Music Club. The event draws audiences of over 5,000 and attracts artists from around the world. It is the culmination of a season of events and competitions celebrating New Zealand country music, and visitors enjoy a healthy dose of ‘Southern Hospitality’ at the same time.

Awesome comments for Containers Direct

"From the beginning of the project when you were able to recommend architects, sub contractors, etc, through to the excellent work carried out by your team (with a special mention of your foreman Richard) and the delivery of the final product, we want you to know that we have been most impressed with your services. Your ability to save us precious dollars by sourcing competitive prices for sub contractors was appreciated. Your professional approach and your ability to provide precise quotations for all aspects of the work undertaken by you and your team, coupled with the high standard of workmanship and timely delivery of the completed product, has been of the highest standard. Building a house out of shipping containers is much more common in Christchurch since the earthquakes, but when we first approached you there was little local knowledge of the concept and I do not believe we could have achieved our goal without your assistance. The steepness of our site meant our house would always be a challenging contract and we knew we needed reliable tradesmen. We are absolutely delighted with the final result. We love living in our house and want to formally acknowledge your contribution to our dream home. It was a pleasure working with you." Yours faithfully Brian & Penny

Another excellent review for TrueStone

"We had our patio paved with Premier Truestone pavers in May 2015. The customer service we got from Allison at Premier was outstanding! Possibly the best customer service from a company we have ever experienced. Allison was extremely helpful in answering all our numerous enquiries. She sent us several free paver samples which was very useful for deciding which pavers would suit our property best. Allison also recommended a local paver registered to work with Premier Truestone pavers which we were grateful for and he did an excellent job. Allison was friendly and informative and went out of her way to help us with the whole process of getting our patio paved. The surprise gift of chocolates and wine at the end was a fine touch to top it all. We are very happy with our beautiful new patio and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Premier Truestone pavers and Premier service to others". - Tiina and Chris
